Come try Padel at South End Raquet Club

Saturday November 2nd you are invited to try Padel at South End Racquet Club.

The game of Padel has been likened to ‘tennis with walls‘ and ‘squash in the sun’. It is a sport that combines the best elements of tennis, squash and racquetball. It has gained tremendous popularity due to its simplicity and similarities to already existing racquet sports.

The rules allow for the use of the back and sidewalls, resulting in longer rallies. The balls used are similar to tennis balls, the scoring the same as tennis, all the serves are underhand.

Padel is a fun game to play and appeals to a wide population. Children enjoy playing as it is easy to learn, promotes teamwork,  improving their hand-eye coordination. It is a family game. The smaller court size brings everyone closer, making social conversation a much more integral part of the game. Padel is a great game for players of all ages and skills as it is both quick and easy to pick up and is less physically demanding than similar sports like squash. Most players get the grasp of the game within the first 20 minutes of playing and find it easy to achieve a level of proficiency so that they can enjoy it because the game is not as dominated by strength and serve as tennis.

How to choose the best racket?

The weight of a racket:

Most rackets range between 355gr. and 395gr. A light racket would be between 355 gr and 375gr. A heavy racket would range 375gr to 395gr.

Lighter rackets are suitable for beginners and women as they are easier to handle.

Thickness of the racket:

Most rackets range 36mm to 38mm. Advanced players should use thicker rackets to hit the ball harder. For beginners it is recommended thinner rackets because they are easier to use.

Materials of the racket:

Most of the frame of the racket is made of fiberglass or carbon. The face may contain kevlar. Carbon and kevlar are introduced to some higher end rackets to make them extra resistant to shocks and accidents.  The face of a padel racket is usually made of soft materials (foam) or hard materials (eva). A high-density, also known as firm core,  the racket provides more power. A low density, also known as soft core, the racket provides more control. A soft core paddle also provides more comfort and is a better choice for a player with tennis elbow. To choose the right one  remains a personal choice.

The Club was asked to form the FIRST JUNIOR NATIONAL PADEL TEAM for the upcoming world championship.

Passion of million amateur players in countries like Mexico, Argentina, Spain, Brazil, Canada and, more recently, the United Kingdom, Padel seeks its place in the United States, and makes it big.

In a country of followers of all types of sports, padel has appeared a few years ago in states like Florida, New York, California and Texas.  It now has a non-profit organization dedicated to promote the sport: the United States Padel Association (USPA), now led by Mike May, its chairman at the time of the Houstonian Club. Even so, padel is still looking to achieve the union of other racquet sports, their close relatives, such as tennis, squash, badminton or even pin-pong.

Teams of men and women have participated in the last four world padel championships held since 2006 (they are every two years). But now the USPA has his sights on what he considers the key to the massive development of the sport in the U.S.: the creation of seed from youth categories.

The first step of the plan is a bold call: the formation of three female and three male teams to compete in World Youth Padel Championship to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, between 29 October and 3 November this year.

“It’s challenging, but not impossible, so I’m sure we’ll be there with the best possible team,” says Fernando Alarcon, general manager of The Club, the padel and tennis complex, minutes away from The Woodlands, south of Creekside Park. Commissioned by the USPA, The Club is responsible for recruiting candidates across the United States, organize trials, select and train for competition.

Alarcón is the director, strategist and leader of this program USPA while Claudio Trevisan, the padel head coach of The Club, will be the head-coach of the U.S. team. Alarcon and Trevisan, both natives of Argentina, come from a successful and long career as professional padel players in their country. Fernando has lived for a decade in the U.S., where he arrived to study at the University of Missouri (got there an MBA in finance) and this year took over management of The Club.

Alarcon and Trevisán have little more than four months to fulfill the mission that the USPA has given them, and therefore already working full time at the call of players in categories 14, 16 and 18 years: 4 female and 4 male for every category, 24 in total. No matter where you live or where you play, the USPA ahead. In addition to the team for the World Cup this year, they have the same task for 2015.

Padel in USA

Padel in the United States

In this post we will look at the different padel facilities in the United States.  We are very excited to play Padel in Los Angeles, California soon but for those that can’t wait until that happens we will show you the other “nearby” places where you can play in the meantime. For now, padel is played in two states: Texas (3 locations) and Florida (2 locations).  New York and California will hopefully be added soon to the list as there are advanced projects to have courts available soon!First, we will start with Texas since it is where padel first landed in the United States.  The first padel court was installed in The Houstonian, an upscale hotel in Houston, Texas.  Here they started with one court that was built in 1993 and later added two courts due to their tremendous success.  In 1993, the United States Padel Association (USPA) was also formed at this location.

Here is a video of The Houstonian padel facilities:

Another nearby facility is Sports Culture in The Woodlands, Texas.  Here you can check out their activities and join them: http://www.sportsculture.net/racquet-sports/padel/

The third padel center in this state is The Club in Spring, Texas.  It is also the newest facility in the United States as they just opened their padel doors in April of 2013.  They have installed three astonishing padel courts that you can see in the image below:

Second, we will take a look at the facilities in Florida.  This state counts with AB Sport Club in Miami, a facility dedicated to the wellness of its members.  It not only offers padel but also fitness.  AB Sport Club has opened a new facility that counts with state of the art machinery.

Look at the very special visit they received! Do you recognize Carlos Moya?? Ex number one in the world tennis player and Roland Garros winner (among other titles).

moya padel Check out their website for more information http://www.absportclub.com.

The other club in Florida is Miami Padel as its name hints; it is in Miami!  This facility has two padel courts; its peculiarity is that these courts are built on top of two tennis courts as you can see in the picture below.  This location has been open for almost four years and still going and improving!  Here is a picture:

Padel is arriving to California!!

Welcome all to our new web! Our goal is to keep you up to date on Padel in California, the entire United States and around the world!

Also, we would love to hear from you, are you a padel player?

Why is everybody talking about Padel?

Padel is the fastest growing racquet sport in the world! It is played in more than 20 countries (Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, UK, France, Italy, Australia, China, United States, United Arab Emirates and many more).

It is a combination of tennis and racquetball: – the scoring is the same as tennis – you use a ball very similar to tennis – you can use the walls much like racquetball As opposed to tennis, you play with a paddle (a shorter racquet made of foam, with wholes and up to 38 mm thick). Most padel courts are outdoors (court dimensions: 66 by 33 feet) with artificial grass/turf as the dominant playing surface.
